Elite Runners Sign Up

Last week, The Forum reported that the Kenyan-dominated Duma Runners Club, based in Coon Rapids, Minn., would likely sign up four runners to run the Fargo Marathon.

So far, three club runners are registered to run. David Tuwei, 29, and Raphael Kuto, 27, have both signed up for the 26.2-mile race. William Serem, 31, has won two half marathons and a 20K in 2008 and signed up for Fargo’s half marathon.

A fourth Duma runner, John Ritch, has not signed up, according to the Fargo Marathon Web site. However, William Kosgei, the club’s head coach, told The Forum that Ritch would run the half marathon.

The race, touted as a fast course because of its relatively flat terrain, may not see any of last year’s champs try to defend his or her titles.

None of the 2007 mens or womens winners in the marathon and half marathon have registered yet to run in 2008, according to the marathon’s Web site. Last year’s winners in the men’s races were Chad Wallin of Tucson, Ariz, in the marathon (2:31:20) and Andrew Carlson of Bloomington, Minn., in the half marathon (1:05:02). Among women, Valerie Gortmaker of Omaha, Neb., won the marathon (2:50:00) while Jennifer Hess of Minneapolis took the half marathon title (1:21:57).
