Into the new year

What’s the best way to bring in the new year?

Well, for those who like to lace up the shoes and run, not much beats joining other harriers. The camaraderie of a run just can’t be beat.

And a new year often brings resolutions, or goals, so signing up for a race is a good way to start fresh. There are a couple of options for runners in the Red River Valley.

In Grand Forks, runners will gather at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Wild Hog Smokehouse to head out for a run or walk. Those who do will receive a free drink, and door prizes will be given away. In addition, to motivate you through the cold, discounts for next fall’s Wild Hog races will be offered. Read more here.

In Fargo, as part of an annual tradition, runners will be meeting at the Y downtown for a run, and then head over to Rhombus Guys Pizza for lunch. For more information on the run, click here. Those looking for race can always sign up for one of the Fargo Marathon races.

Personally, I hope to get a run in and today I’ve already signed up for one race. More on that decision to come, but I’m expecting to do several races next spring and summer to prep for the New York City Marathon.

In terms of the day to day, I’ve aimed for a model of consistency: the final week of 2013 marked the 13th consecutive week logging at least 40 miles. To reach my goals, I’ll need to add mileage and some other disciplines, but I’m looking forward to the challenge for 2014: trail races, marathons and triathlons are all part of the mix. And lots of running time with a new pup.
