Surprise yourself

“What you believe has more power than what you dream or wish or hope for. You become what you believe.” - Oprah Winfrey

Several weeks ago, a runner posted a comment on a blog article, looking for advice in dealing with an injury as she trained for the Twin Cities Marathon. It was a pretty busy time, and the comment slipped past me until last week. She wanted input on how to make through the marathon taper – and skipping the race wasn’t an option.

A part of my response included the following words: “You might just surprise yourself.”

After writing those words, I realize how important they are to me right now. There have been other mantras that have gotten me through a race. I’ve run down the lonely road of faith many times, but this time feels different. It’s not so much about faith. It’s about taking chances and running bold. And it’s about expecting the best.

In the past, I’ve joked with a friend about “letting the run come to you.” But it’s also something I believe. It means running to your best of your ability on that given day, taking every opportunity that presents itself, and confidently carrying out a purposeful and well-designed plan.

Best of luck to all the runners this weekend in the Fargo Half Marathon, Chicago, or wherever the road takes them. Expect the best, and believe your goals are possible. You might just surprise yourself.
